[Roycrofters] Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists: Bellini. Elbert Hubbard. East Aurora, NY: Roycrofters, 1902. Limited edition: #108 of 940 copies. First thus, pages numbered 57-77 (as these were issued in serial form, but is complete). Limp brown suede covers with yapp edges, tooled gilt leather inset panels to front, brown watered silk pastedowns, handmade paper, decorative woodcut title page and chapter initials designed by Samuel Warner and hand illumined in several colors. Frontis. portrait of Bellini with tissue guard.
As is generally the case with hundred-year old limp suede, shows slight flaking along inner edges. Front pastedown shows slight fraying along one edge; handsome owner's bookplate on front with offsetting to endpaper. Binding is complete and intact, pages clean. Rare in the limited edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Buckram. Ex-Library. Subtitle: "the Stirring Adventures of Captain Mars and His Two Friends Messieurs Scribbley and Daubiton." Folio, 53 pages of hand-drawn, zincographic "cartoons" on tinted backgrounds with "handwritten" text (printed from engraved zinc plates). Illustrations printed on rectos only. Dark green buckram binding, circa 1910, covers somewhat lightened/rubbed, nicely sewn with new endpapers. Small name and number in white on spine, small library bookplate on pastedown and stamp on dedication page. Minor repair to page 31. Some scattered smudges from handling to pages.
