History of the Town of Hanover, Massachusetts, 1910-1977. By the Hanover Historical Society, under the direction of Fanny Hitchcock Phillips, 1977. 220 pages, hardcover, no dj issued. Green boards with gilt titles. This book was published to complement earlier town histories (those published in 1853 and 1910) and bring the town's story up-to-date, as well as to commemorate the town's 250th anniversary. Includes numerous names and dates throughout. Fine copy, clean, tight and square. $24

New England Prospect: Maps, Place Names and the Historical Landscape. Peter Beres, editor. Boston: Boston University. The Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife: Annual Proceedings 1980. Softcover, yellow pictorial wraps. 132 pages, 9'x6". Very good, a little crinkle to bottom front corner and first 18 pages; back cover bottom corner slightly creased and very minor soiling. Interior clean and well bound, no marks, spine not creased.

The Dublin Seminar was a continuing series of conferences and publications focused on the "daily life, work, and culture of the common man in New England's past." This volume specifically presents papers dealing with New England maps, geography, and place naming. The included papers are as follows:

  • Land Surveys of William and John Godsoe of Kittery, Maine: 1689-1769, by Richard Candee
  • The Range Township in Eighteenth Century New Hampshire, by James Garvin
  • Acculturation of the New England Landscape: Native and English Toponymy of Eastern Massachusetts, by Arthur Krim
  • A New England Coastal Wilderness, by John Stilgoe
  • Ideality and Actuality: The Landscape of Northern New England, by Robert McGrath
  • New England Map Bibliography

An interesting set of studies, very well illustrated with black and white photos of early maps, and with an important bibliography listing primary and secondary sources on New England mapping and boundary studies. $25
