Odds & Ends

[Billiards] Winning Pocket Billiards, for Beginners and Advanced Players, With a Section on Trick Shots. By Willie Mosconi. New York: Crown Publishers, 1972. Ninth printing, 139 pages. Mosconi (1913-1993) won the BCA World Pool Championship 15 times and is considered one of the game's greatest players. This book SIGNED and inscribed by Willie Mosconi: "Best Wishes from Willie Mosconi," on page preceding half title. The name of the person to whom the book was inscribed has been rather heavily crossed out. Full color wrapper and more than 100 illustrations. Bit of spine slant (wrap spine too narrow), front cover creased along joint, light edgewear and rubbing. A couple pen marks to inside front cover (looks like Willie tested the pen there before signing). Interior clean and well bound. Many terrific illustrations of Wille setting up shots, together with diagrams to improve your pool game. Scarce signed. $100

[Cooking] Kains, M. G.. Modern Book of Home Cannning. NY: Greenberg, 1938. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine/Very Good. 184 pages (plus extra blank pages for notes). Light brown cloth with green printing and cover illustration; DJ in blue, white, and yellow. Book fine, one tiny rub on bottom front edge, light browning to page edges, else clean and tight, does not appear to have ever been read. DJ very good, lightly toned, with some shallow edge nicks and creases, front flap clipped. This book is almost never found in an original DJ. Topics covered include canned food methods, containers, recipes, syrups and brines, foods that can be canned (veggies, meats, fish, etc.), pickles and relishes, jellies (including Delaware method), jams, preserves, fruit butters, etc. Heavily illustrated, including many wonderful contraptions that I don’t think anyone still uses (such as tin can sealing machines). A third wave feminist classic! SOLD

[Philosophy] Dissertatio Philosophica de Universalitate Gubernationis Divinae. Praeside Doct. Petro Nicolao Christiernin. Publice ventilandam sistit Petrus L. Kraft. In Auditorio Carolino Majori Die XXI. Junii Anno MDCCLXXV, Upsaliae.

30 page pamphlet (26 numbered pages, plus title page and preliminaries), simply sewn, on rustic paper stock, uncut and untrimmed, approx 8" x 6.5". A number "27" written in pencil on front, otherwise free of marks and appears to be in excellent condition. In Latin.

Pehr Niclas Christiernin, 1725-1799 of Uppsala University, was a well known Swedish philospher and a classical economist in the tradition of Hume. Works other than his book "The Swedish Bullionist Controversy" are rarely seen. $150
